One of the Internet's Best Travel Secrets

Wednesday, 19 January 2011 00:00

Hi Mitch - I've been meaning to write to you to tell you about the trip. Everything was great. Everything went smoothly and the weather was spectacular.

We were really satisfied with both resorts, even though they were so much different from each other. The building/room location at Sandals (Cap Estate bdlg, I think) was really convenient, we were on the second floor near the far end of the bldg, close enough to everything and on the same floor as the lobby and only one flight of stairs down to the beach level. Room size was great with view of upper cascade patio, pool, jacuzzi and the bay (room 1215). Food and service at Sandals was good. We enjoyed dinner at the Pier at the Halycon the best but Toscaninis and Barefoot by the Sea were our favorites at the Grande. Loved all the lunch options at Josephines - it was my favorite. The resort staff also really did a wonderful job with the Beachside BBQ and especially the New Years Eve dinner event. We were really impressed with those productions and the food. We did a speedboat tour with Simon Says booked through the hotel one day and also hiked Pigeon Island. Both were lots of fun with amazing views. Only frustration we experienced at Sandals was that even though there was plenty of staff members around, it was difficult to get the right person to talk to. For example, if I had a question for the front desk, or reservations, or tours, the proper person had always "just stepped out". Otherwise we thought it was great. The nightly entertainment was also really great. I felt like we could of stayed more than 6 nights to fully take advantage of everything at the resort. Staff and playmakers were very friendly and engaging. Bartenders were very friendly. The resort seemed to be maybe 75% booked and I'd say it was 1/3 Americans, 1/3 Canadians, and 1/3 UK or European. About 1/2-3/4 of the Americans were honeymooners, many from the Mid-west.

We took a cab to Calabash Cove, quick and easy ride. Calabash was very nice and the exact opposite of Sandals. We enjoyed the quiet and privacy of the resort. We had breakfast and dinner at the hotel restaurant each day with lunch poolside. Food was very good. We experienced one night of extremely slow service at dinner (we finished a whole bottle of wine between ordering and getting our appetizers, about 1 hour). But on other nights and breakfast the service was very prompt. Staff at Calabash is very friendly and courteous. We enjoyed our room (104) and the patio and view. No real complaints, only thing is the walls seemed to be very thin - mainly through the door into the hallway area. We appreciated the full bar in the room, too. We felt we could have maybe done one more day at the resort, any more time then that and we would probably have wanted to venture out for more day tours and dinners. We had a car arranged through the hotel to take us to the airport, took us along the east coast. It was nice to see that side of the island and also the devestation from the hurricane. I was told the resort was close to booked full but it never felt crowded, there was an overabundance of lounges and chaises. Most people were either from UK or America, with all the Americans we met being on their honeymoons. Most were from the Mid-Atlantic or Northeast.

The helicopter from UVF to SLU was also an awesome experience. Prior to the trip I had emailed the GM at Sandals re: a ride from SLU to the hotel, he confirmed but they never showed. No big deal though, we just took a cab.

Overall we loved the whole trip. The island and people are wonderful. We're already talking about going back. We felt like Sandals was more energetic and social and Calabash was much more private and quiet. We would go back to both resorts. We'd go to Sandals to have fun and we'd go to Calabash if we were trying to unwind.

Thank you to you and your office for everything, you made the trip pretty much painless - check-ins and check-outs at the hotels were such a breeze. I tell everyone how great it was booking with you.

Looking forward to booking my next vacation with you. In fact, I am thinking about booking a short trip at the end of April.

Thanks again!

Vince
