One of the Internet's Best Travel Secrets

Overall our stay at Sandals Whitehouse was great.  The resort was really nice, activities fun.  We went on the canopy tour, which was the zip line tour through the rainforest, it was pretty fun.  I have to say you were pretty honest about the food.  There were a few things that were pretty bad, but most things were pretty good.  It was a little disappointing to see that they didn't have better fresh fruit.  The only local fruit was papaya and mango, and everything else was pretty awful, including pineapple.  It would have been nice to see more local fruit from the island.  As far as restaurants go, we liked Eleanor's, Guiseppe's, and Bayside for dinner.  Lunch my favorite was Bluefields; I actually enjoyed the jerk chicken and Jamaican beef patties.

A couple recommendations as far as food goes:  If you want to try real jerk chicken, go to the Jamaican cooking class.  They show you how it is made and give you a plate of real jerk chicken.  The stuff at Bluefields is actually just made with a jerk sauce, where the real stuff is made of fresh peppers, onions, and spices.  Also, the omelet station at Bayside is always good for breakfast, and the pasta station there is a great lunch.

As far as drinks go, we figured out how to get good drinks there.  You have to specifically request better liquor, or they'll just use the well drink stuff.  Also you have to specifically request "no syrup" or they'll put that strawberry syrup in everything which has a ton of high fructose corn syrup.  By the second or third day we had figured out the way to order a good frozen drink was to specifically request:  "fresh papaya and mango, no syrup, skyy vodka" or something like that...  The red stripe beer is decent so no complaints there.  If I had one suggestion for the bar it would be to have local fruits for drinks, papaya, mango, pineapple, banana, and use real cane sugar for the drinks that need sweetening instead of that awful corn syrup.  You're on the sugar cane capital of the world, but it's dissapointing to see that they can't source more local fruits and supplies in general.

Entertainment ranged from pretty good to disappointing.  The reggae band was really nice and played most nights.  Rodney in the piano bar was very entertaining and we enjoyed that place a lot, but the shows at le Cabaret left a lot to be desired.  Also, it was a little disappointing that most of the shows didn't start until 10 pm.

Snorkeling was fun, and also sailing on the catamarans was fun, we did that a couple times.  The pools are really nice, especially the main pool.  The resort was not very full so we had no problem finding a nice beach chair to sit on by the pool every day.  The swim up bars are a nice touch.

Also, I can see why some people like staying at the French village so much.  The French pool always had a pretty hot party going on at the bar and they have reggae music playing, plus Bluefields is right there in case you get hungry.  You could probably stay at that pool all week and be happy.

Anyway, it's a great vacation spot and I can see why a lot of people like it.  Personally I think they could improve it a hundred times by sourcing more local food, instead of shipping in so much frozen food.  I understand why they do it though.  Most americans would be perfectly happy with all of the shipped in food, since it's what they're used to.  I prefer to have a vacation and experience more local types of food instead of just what's "familiar."  I also can kind of understand why the food is the way it is.  We all want a good steak dinner on our vacation, and it's not like there is a huge supply of good beef on the island, so they probably have to ship in frozen steaks every few days from overseas.  The steaks were decent, for frozen steaks.  I guess you can't expect to experience paradise on a remote island and also experience a mouth-watering steak that hasn't had to travel thousands of miles to get there...

Anyway, all in all, a great vacation.  We'll definitely book with you for next years vacation as well.

Thanks,
Luke
